The Georgia Prison Strike brings up some interesting issues concerning "slavery," both antebellum chattel slavery and modern incarceration or "New Age slavery." "ACCESS TO FAMILIES: The DOC has disconnected thousands of prisoners from their families by imposing excessive telephone charges and innumerable barriers to visitation."

Every modern prisoner is separated from his or her family, though the separation still allows limited visits. The average slave never left his or her spouse or young children. During 2007 up to 58 per cent of people who were unable to keep up with debt repayments were forced to refinance them or re-mortgage their house in order to reduce their outgoings.
